Using Fine Art Photography to Set the Mood in Your Space

Look Beyond the Frame!

How to Use Fine Art Photography to Set the Mood in Your Space

Fine art photography has the unique ability to capture moments, tell stories, and evoke emotions, making it a powerful tool for transforming your living or working space. Beyond just serving as a visual centerpiece, the right piece of art can set the tone for an entire room and influence how you and your guests feel when you step inside.

Let’s explore how to use fine art photography to create different moods in your space, from calm and serene to bold and energizing, and how to choose and display pieces that truly resonate with your desired atmosphere.

Understanding the Power of Fine Art Photography

Fine art photography goes beyond capturing a scene - it’s about interpreting the world in a way that evokes a specific response from the viewer. When used in interior design, these works can significantly impact the ambiance of a room. Whether it’s the calming effect of a misty landscape, the vibrant energy of a bustling cityscape, or the introspective mood of a minimalist abstract, fine art photography can set the stage for the emotions you want to cultivate in your space.

Art is a personal expression, and choosing photography that resonates with you not only reflects your style but also enhances the overall atmosphere of your home. The colors, subject matter, and composition all play crucial roles in how the artwork influences the mood of a room.

Creating a Calming and Serene Atmosphere

If your goal is to create a calm and serene space, look for fine art photography that features soft colors, gentle landscapes, or abstract images with flowing lines. Coastal scenes, tranquil lakes, or misty mountains in muted blues, greens, and grays can evoke a sense of peace and relaxation. These pieces are perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, or any space where you want to relax.

Tips for Displaying Calming Art:

  • Placement: Consider hanging serene artwork in areas where you spend time relaxing, such as above your bed, in a reading nook, or across from a cozy seating area.
  • Lighting: Use soft, diffused lighting to enhance the calming effect of the art. Avoid harsh overhead lights; instead, opt for wall sconces or table lamps that create a warm, inviting glow.
  • Pairing with Decor: Complement the artwork with natural materials like wood, linen, or wool, and incorporate plants to further connect the space to the soothing elements of nature.

Adding Energy and Vibrancy with Bold Photography

To infuse a space with energy and vibrancy, choose fine art photography that features dynamic compositions, bold colors, or subjects that exude movement and life. Urban scenes, vibrant abstracts, or colorful landscapes can bring a lively and uplifting mood to a room. These types of images work well in spaces where you want to inspire creativity, conversation, or activity, such as home offices, dining rooms, sitting rooms or living rooms.

Tips for Displaying Bold Art:

  • Placement: Hang bold artwork in high-traffic areas or places where you want to make a statement. Above a fireplace, in a hallway, or as a focal point in a dining room are all great options.
  • Lighting: Use directional lighting or spotlights to highlight the artwork’s vibrant colors and details, making it a true centerpiece.
  • Pairing with Decor: Balance the boldness of the art with neutral or complementary decor. Use accent colors from the artwork in your furnishings or accessories to create a cohesive and energetic look.

Creating a Cozy and Intimate Space

For spaces where you want to create a cozy and intimate atmosphere, such as a den, library, or personal retreat, opt for fine art photography that features warm tones, intimate compositions, or nostalgic subjects. Think of sepia-toned photographs, close-ups of natural textures like leaves or stones, or images of quaint, quiet scenes that invite you to linger and enjoy the peace of the moment.

Tips for Displaying Cozy Art:

  • Placement: Position cozy artwork in spaces meant for relaxation and personal reflection. Above a fireplace, next to a comfortable armchair, or in a small, personal gallery wall can be perfect spots.
  • Lighting: Soft, ambient lighting such as candles, lanterns, or fairy lights can enhance the warmth of the artwork and create a snug atmosphere.
  • Pairing with Decor: Incorporate soft textiles, such as throws and cushions, in warm colors that pick up the tones in the artwork. Add personal touches like books or memorabilia to complete the intimate feel.

Evoking Inspiration and Creativity

Fine art photography can also be a source of inspiration, perfect for spaces where creativity is encouraged. Abstract photography, thought-provoking compositions, or pieces that play with light and shadow can stimulate the imagination and offer new perspectives. These are great for home offices, studios, or any space dedicated to creative or inspirational work.

Tips for Displaying Inspirational Art:

  • Placement: Hang inspirational pieces in your workspace, where you can see them often and let them spark new ideas. A gallery wall of multiple works can also create a dynamic and creative atmosphere.
  • Lighting: Natural light can enhance the details and textures of your art, making it feel more alive and engaging. Consider positioning art near windows or using daylight-balanced bulbs in your lighting fixtures.
  • Pairing with Decor: Mix different styles and mediums of art to create a space that feels eclectic and stimulating. Incorporate items like vision boards, sketches, or other personal creative projects to surround yourself with inspiration.

How to Choose the Right Fine Art Photography for Your Space

When selecting fine art photography for your home, consider the following steps to ensure that the piece you choose not only looks beautiful but also enhances the mood you want to create:

  1. Reflect on the desired mood of the room or space.  Think about the primary use of the room and the mood you want to evoke. Is it a space for relaxation, work, entertainment, reflection?
  2. Consider the color palette you will be using. Choose art that complements the existing colors in your room. Look for pieces that either match or contrast in a pleasing way, bringing harmony or intentional boldness to your decor.
  3. The size and space of the room.  Consider the size of your wall space and choose art that fits proportionately. A large, statement piece can serve as the focal point of the room, while smaller pieces can be grouped together for impact.
  4. Find art with a personal connection. Choose art that resonates with you on a personal level. Whether it reminds you of a favorite place, positive experience, stirs up a fond memory, or simply makes you smile, personal connection is key to creating a space that feels inviting and welcoming.

Final Thought Wrap-Up

Fine art photography is more than just wall decoration, it’s a powerful tool for setting the mood in your space and creating an environment that reflects your personal style and emotions. Whether you want a calm retreat, an energetic hub, or a cozy nook, the right art can make all the difference. By thoughtfully choosing and displaying fine art photography, you can transform any room into a space that not only looks beautiful but also feels exactly how you want it to feel.

So go beyond the frame and let your art set the stage for the mood of your home or office.

More about Lisa Blount Photography

Meet the Artist: Lisa Blount

Where memories, moments, and meaning come together through the art of photography.

Lisa Blount Experience Photographer and Fine Art

Hi, I’m Lisa—photographer, storyteller, wife, mother, experience-chaser, cat-herder and lover of all things nature and travel.
I don’t just take pictures. I create visual experiences that spark connection, bring joy, and turn a house into a home.

For me, art has never just been about capturing something pretty—it’s about capturing something personal. The way the light hits a quiet mountainside, the colors swirling through lichen on a rock, the stillness of a place that made you feel something you can’t quite explain. That’s what draws me in.

Since ART is a true reflection of what the artist sees, feels, and interprets - it is therefore a reflection of ones self .... thru their ART.

A Little Backstory

Born in California, raised in Arkansas, I’ve lived within seven miles of my grandparents’ 1936 homestead since I was ten. As an only child of

an only child, I spent a lot of time creating—scrapbooking, designing, collecting memories, and turning them into keepsakes. That early creative spark still fuels me today.

My love of photography started young (I was the kid with disposable cameras on every trip), but it really took off about 14 years ago before a family vacation to Yellowstone. I bought my first “real” camera for that trip—and that’s when everything changed. I began seeing the world differently—through textures, light, movement, and mood—and I haven’t stopped since.

Why I Create

My art is personal, and always rooted in experience. When my boys were young, I photographed our adventures so they could relive the memories in scrapbooks. As my parents aged—especially my dad, who battled vascular dementia—I began using photography as a way to preserve his memories, too. Watching him reconnect with faces and places through photos reminded me that art is about more than beauty—it’s about meaning, memory, and the moments that matter most.

What Makes My Art Different

Lisa Blount, Photographer, action shot in Yosemite National Park

It’s not just a photo. It’s a feeling.

I call myself an Experience Photographer because my work goes beyond the lens. Each piece is meant to evoke emotion, spark reflection, and create a connection—whether it’s to a place you’ve been, a dream you hold, or a memory you never want to forget.

Scale matters.

Most of my art is created large—like, several-feet-wide large—because seeing it on your wall is a completely different experience than seeing it on a screen. It’s bold. It’s immersive. It’s meant to stop you in your tracks.

Museum-quality materials only.

I print exclusively on premium materials like TruLife Acrylic, ChromaLuxe High Gloss Metal, and Dibond Brushed Metal—each chosen for their ability to bring out color, depth, and detail in a way that feels alive. Everything is custom-crafted and digitally signed for authenticity.

The Personal Side

Family First. Always.

I’ve been married to my husband Jim for over 30 years, and together we’ve raised two incredible sons who (in my completely unbiased opinion) hang the moon. They’ve been a part of this journey every step of the way—as travel companions, equipment carriers, art installers, and my biggest supporters.

They’re also my why. They inspire me to keep creating, keep growing, and keep telling stories through art.

We love to… Travel, Laugh, do Escape Rooms and Call the Hogs!

What do I love to photograph?

Honestly? Whatever catches my eye. I never force a shot—I wait for the moment to unfold. I’m especially drawn to nature, abstract patterns, textures, and color. And lichen—yes, lichen! It’s like nature’s tiny abstract painting, and I’m obsessed.

Art + Design = The Perfect Pairing

Art isn’t just for walls—it’s part of how a space feels. That’s why I’ve created mood boards that pair my artwork with color palettes, furnishings, and interior design styles. They live on my blog and are a great way to imagine how a piece might look in your space.

I also host exclusive Art, Wine & Design events in partnership with local designers. These invite-only evenings are filled with good conversation, beautiful spaces, and of course, lots of art. If you're an interior designer or art lover, let’s connect!

Q&A:

The Art Buying Experience

Everything you need to know before bringing a piece home.

Q: Isn’t it just a photo?
A: It starts as a photograph—but it becomes fine art. Every piece is carefully edited, professionally printed, and crafted with premium materials that bring out color, light, texture, and depth. My art is large, bold, and designed to be a focal point in your space.

Q: What makes your work different from mass-produced prints?
A: Unlike mass-produced art, my pieces are custom-created and printed on museum-quality materials like TruLife Acrylic, ChromaLuxe Metal, and Dibond Brushed Metal. Every piece is digitally signed and made to order—bringing you a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Q: Do you offer limited editions?
A: Yes! I offer several limited edition pieces that are signed, numbered, and exclusive—making them collectible works of art for your space.

Q: Is your art made in the USA?
A: Absolutely. Every piece is printed and assembled right here in the U.S., supporting multiple small businesses along the way.

Customization & Sizing

Because art should fit your space—and your story.

Q: I don’t see the size I need—can you help?
A: Definitely! Most pieces can be custom-sized to fit your wall perfectly. Just reach out with your dimensions and I’ll be happy to provide a quote.

Q: How do I choose the right size for my space?
A: A good rule of thumb: art should cover about ⅔ to ¾ of your wall space, or 60–75% of the furniture width it hangs above. You can also tape out sizes on your wall—or contact me for help. I even have a blog post all about it!

Q: Do you offer framing?
A: Most of my art is designed to be displayed frameless with a museum-style float mount. But if you’d prefer a frame, I can custom quote one for you!

Caring for Your Art

Beautiful and built to last—with just a little TLC.

Q: How do I clean and care for my art?
A: It depends on the material:
TruLife Acrylic: Use a microfiber cloth and acrylic-safe cleaner (no ammonia).
High Gloss Metal: A damp microfiber cloth or water/alcohol mix works great.
Dibond Brushed Metal: A dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth does the trick.
Canvas: Dust gently; avoid moisture.

Need detailed tips? Visit my Cleaning + Care page.

Q: How is the artwork installed?
A: All of my large artwork comes ready-to-hang with a museum float mount. No frame needed. Just use a sturdy wall cleat system (instructions included). And I’m always happy to help if you have questions!

Shipping, Returns & Gifting

Q: How long does shipping take?
A: Since each piece is custom made just for you, production takes about 14 business days, with shipping around 5–7 days depending on your location. You’ll get tracking info as soon as it ships!

Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: At the moment, I only ship within the U.S., but if you're international, reach out—I’m happy to check options and get you a quote.

Q: What if my art arrives damaged?
A: If your piece is damaged during shipping, please contact me immediately with photos of the box and artwork. I’ll make it right and replace your piece at no cost to you.

Q: Do you offer gift certificates?
A: Yes! Gift certificates are a great way to give the gift of art—especially when you're short on time or want your recipient to choose the piece that speaks to them most.
