Exploring the Tranquil Beauty of Lake Brienz, Interlaken, Switzerland
One of my new favorite places is Lake Brienz in Interlaken Switzerland. Nestled in the heart of Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region, Lake Brienz is a beautiful little lake that is well known for its deep turquoise color and surrounding towns, waterfalls and movie locations.
If you’ve done your Interlaken research, you’ll know that there are two lakes - Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. You can go on a boat ride (hop on/off) on each one of the lakes. Due to our time schedule and the fact that we just wanted to ride to each thru each of these stops, we chose Lake Brienz - and are so glad that we did. If we had a full day, I think Lake Thun would have been beautiful too… but we’re going to focus on Lake Brienz!
Natural Beauty of Lake Brienz
Lake Brienz is a natural lake that was formed by glacier movements. You can tell this from the steep, rocky faces of the surrounding mountains that plunge directly into its waters. The lake spans approximately 8.7 miles in length and 1.75 miles at its widest point, with a maximum depth of about 850 feet, making it one of the deeper lakes in Switzerland.
The beautiful color of Lake Brienz is due to the fine glacial silt suspended in the water, which reflects the sunlight and gives the lake its vibrant turquoise appearance. This striking color, combined with the surrounding green of the dense forests and the whites and grays of the snowy Alpine peaks, creates a picturesque setting.
Cultural and Historical Significance
The region around Lake Brienz is rich in cultural heritage, with the nearby village of Brienz known for its traditional woodcarving craftsmanship. Youth - the Movie
One of the stops on Lake Brienz is famous for its sites being in the movie “Youth”. It was a very busy stop as many people wanted to get off the boat and explore the area where the movie was filmed.

It stars Michael Caine as Fred Ballinger, a retired composer and conductor, and Harvey Keitel as Mick Boyle, a film director, both of whom are staying at a luxurious Swiss Alps resort. Seeburg Castle
Seeburg Castle, nestled along the picturesque shores of Lake Brienz in Switzerland, is a hidden gem that exudes old-world charm and captivating beauty. This majestic waterfall cascades down a series of 14 tiers, dropping over 1640 feet from the mountains into Lake Brienz. The falls are so large that you can’t see the whole waterfall from any one spot (except maybe the sky-view). The boat ride takes you right by the lower level of the Giessbach falls where you can get off the boat, walk around and ride the funicular up to the Grandhotel. You can also walk farther up the waterfall, or you can come back later and do it from the middle level. The falls are surrounded by lush, verdant forests, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere that captures the essence of the Swiss Alps. The sight and sound of the cascading water, combined with the breathtaking scenery, make Giessbach Falls a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers alike. Trust me …. At the base of the falls sits the historic Grandhotel Giessbach, a grand 19th-century hotel that adds a touch of elegance and nostalgia to the area. Built in 1874, the Grandhotel Giessbach is one of Switzerland’s oldest and most iconic hotels. It was originally designed as a luxurious retreat for wealthy travelers seeking the restorative beauty of the Swiss Alps. The Grandhotel Giessbach is not only a place to stay but also a gateway to experiencing the natural beauty of the region.
We drove to the guest parking / trailhead and walked to the middle tier of the waterfall and the Grandhotel. They have nice little area where you can enjoy some lunch or dinner (or snack) along with the beautiful view of Lake Brienz and Giessbach Waterfall! While there you can also explore the scenic hiking trails around the falls, which provide various viewpoints to admire the cascading water and the surrounding landscape. One of the unique features of the hotel is its vintage funicular railway, one of the oldest in Europe, which transports visitors from the lake’s shore up to the hotel and falls. This charming funicular ride offers stunning views of the falls and the surrounding area, making the journey as memorable as the destination
