Decorating with Coastal Photography: Bring the Beach Home Year-Round

Decorating with Coastal Photography: Bring the Beach Home Year-Round

There’s something magical about the coast—the gentle sound of waves, the calming colors of the sea, and the feel of soft sand underfoot. For those of us who crave that coastal tranquility year-round, coastal photography provides a way to bring the refreshing energy of the beach into our homes. Coastal photography, with its unique focus on serene landscapes, ocean scenes, and beach-inspired tones, can transform any room into a soothing sanctuary.

This guide will show you how to incorporate coastal photography into your home decor, from soft, weathered colors to striking images of famous beaches and landmarks. We’ll explore some stunning art examples, such as Color of Weathered Wood, St. Lucia Beach, Nairn Beach, Color of Sand abstract art, and St. Lucia Pitons, that will make you feel like you’re always near the ocean, no matter where you live.

Let’s start with the wall color

For a coastal style decor, you’ll want wall colors that evoke the serene, airy feeling of the beach. Here are some beautiful Sherwin-Williams shades to create a relaxing, beach-inspired atmosphere in your home:

  1. Sea Salt (SW 6204) - A soft, muted green with a hint of blue, Sea Salt is a favorite for coastal spaces. It brings a gentle touch of color, reminiscent of sea foam, and pairs well with whites and neutrals.
  2. Tradewind (SW 6218) - A light, airy blue with a hint of gray, Tradewind gives the look of a calm, clear sky. It’s perfect for creating a tranquil, open feel in bedrooms, bathrooms, or living spaces.
  3. Drift of Mist (SW 9166) - A warm, pale gray that resembles sandy beaches. Drift of Mist is a versatile neutral that adds depth and warmth without overpowering the room.
  4. Waterscape (SW 6470) - For a fresh, tropical vibe, try Waterscape, a soft aqua that feels like the ocean on a bright day. It adds a pop of color without overwhelming a space.
  5. Shoreline (SW 6208) - A muted, warm gray with sandy undertones, Shoreline brings a subtle beach feel to any room. It pairs well with wood accents and is ideal for a relaxed, coastal atmosphere.

These colors are perfect for achieving a soothing, coastal-inspired palette that can make you feel like you’re at the beach year-round!

Deciding on Coastal Art for the Walls

Coastal photography is more than just beautiful scenery; it evokes a sense of peace and calm. It captures the interplay of light, water, and sky, transforming natural elements into works of art that refresh and inspire. Coastal art has a unique appeal due to its soothing colors and tranquil vibes. By bringing these oceanic hues into your home, you create a space that feels open, airy, and inviting.

Coastal art works well with a wide variety of decor styles, from rustic and farmhouse to minimalist and modern. With high-quality fine art photography, you can capture the essence of the coast in a way that feels personal and timeless.

The Colors of Coastal Photography: Setting the Mood

One of the greatest appeals of coastal photography lies in its color palette. Coastal art often features shades that are soft and muted yet rich in texture, mirroring the natural elements of the seaside. Let’s break down some of the common coastal colors and how to use them to set the tone in your home.

  • Blues and Teals: The most prominent color in coastal photography, blue, symbolizes peace, calm, and tranquility. Teals and soft sea greens can bring warmth and add a touch of tropical flair.
  • Sandy Beiges and Creams: Inspired by beach sands, these colors are neutral and versatile, working well as backdrops for bolder elements or blending seamlessly with any decor.
  • Weathered Grays and Driftwood Tones: These hues bring to mind the image of weathered wood along the shore, adding an earthy, rustic feel to your decor. They work well in rustic and farmhouse-style interiors.
  • Whites and Soft Neutrals: Reminiscent of sun-bleached shells and washed-up stones, whites add brightness and openness to a space. This look is especially stunning in rooms that already receive ample natural light.

Decorating with “Color of Weathered Wood” Coastal Art

The Color of Weathered Wood is a versatile choice for anyone looking to add an earthy, rustic vibe to their decor. This type of photography captures the beauty of natural textures and subtle colors, reminiscent of driftwood softened by years of ocean waves. Imagine this piece on a large wall in a living room or as a statement piece in a beach-style kitchen—it’s a beautiful way to add coastal charm to your home.

Using weathered wood tones in your decor brings a feeling of organic simplicity and elegance. This artwork pairs well with farmhouse or rustic furniture, especially pieces made from reclaimed wood or wicker. To accentuate the weathered look, add textiles in soft, natural fabrics like linen or jute. Together, these elements create a harmonious, beach-inspired atmosphere.

This piece - captures the true beauty of St Lucia and adds the ocean waters, large rocks, and far-away sailboat.

Bring Tropical Vibes Home with “St. Lucia Beach” Art

If you dream of warm, tropical island destinations, St. Lucia Beach photography captures the essence of an exotic escape. This vibrant, high-quality photography piece transports you straight to the golden sands and turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The scene instantly energizes a room and makes you feel as if you’re on an endless vacation.

For a bedroom, a large art of St. Lucia Beach above the bed can transform the space into a serene retreat. Choose bedding and throw pillows in blues and greens to complement the artwork, evoking the colors of the Caribbean sea. To amplify the tropical effect, add lush, green plants like palm trees or ferns to bring life and vibrancy into the room. A bamboo or rattan chair paired with this art piece completes the tropical feel, adding warmth and texture.

Capturing Coastal Serenity with “Nairn Beach” Photography

The Nairn Beach in Scotland is a different type of coastal beauty. Known for its peaceful shores, stunning views, and soft, pastel tones, a photograph of Nairn Beach brings a gentle, calming effect to any room. The scene is ideal for anyone who appreciates the subtler, more refined side of coastal photography.

Incorporating Nairn Beach art into a living room or reading nook can create a sanctuary-like atmosphere. Pair it with decor that embraces minimalism—think white furniture, airy curtains, and soft rugs. Add natural elements like a wicker baskets or driftwood to keep the coastal vibe. This art piece will serve as a calming focal point, encouraging relaxation and introspection.

“Color of Sand” Abstract Art: A Modern Coastal Twist

Abstract art like Color of Sand captures the essence of the coast in a unique and creative way. This abstract coastal art piece is a close-up of sand and then the bright sunlight was taken out ( it resembled a bunch of pixels ).  The colors were amazing and I immediately knew it needed captured - just not as a bunch of dots.   An oil paint filter was applied to make the sands swirl or dance on the art.  And a unique piece of colorful and whimsical beach art was created.    It’s a modern take on coastal decor that still feels grounded in nature.

Coastal themed sitting area with a light blue chair and a large art print of abstract sand with an oil filter applied. The art is called the color of sand and shows all of the colors found in the St Lucia sand when you take the bright sunlight out. pinks and teals surface. Stunning abstract art.

Color of Sand works well in contemporary spaces that blend coastal and modern aesthetics. Imagine it as a centerpiece above a cabinet in a minimalist living room or as part of a gallery wall in a hallway. Because it doesn’t depict an actual landscape, it invites viewers to interpret the piece, evoking the sense of a unique experience rarely seen by the human eye due to the bright sunshine on the island.

To complement the art, incorporate minimalistic furniture in neutral or pastel colors, such as whites, tans, or grays, blues, pink or teal. Add small decor accents like ceramic vases, greenery or glass candle holders to keep the space feeling clean and modern while maintaining the essence of the coast.

Bring Drama with “St. Lucia Pitons” Coastal Photography

The Pitons in St. Lucia are iconic, dramatic peaks that rise from the Caribbean Sea, creating one of the world’s most memorable coastal landscapes. This large art of the St. Lucia Pitons captures not only the calming beauty of the ocean but also the breathtaking views of nature created mountains. It’s a bold choice for those who want a statement piece that combines coastal beauty with rugged strength.

St Lucia Pitons 60x40 or 30x20 in home sitting area

This piece works particularly well in spaces that call for a striking visual—like a home office, over a fireplace mantle, a dining room, or even an entryway. The dramatic composition of the Pitons against the sky creates an instant focal point that draws the eye, adding a sense of adventure to your decor.

Pair St. Lucia Pitons art with lighter furniture or earthy tones to bring out the contrast and depth in the image. This pairing can help balance the intense colors of the art while creating a warm, inviting space that reflects your love for bold coastal landscapes.

Tips for Choosing Coastal Photography for Your Space

  1. Consider the Room’s Purpose: Choose serene, calming coastal scenes for bedrooms or reading nooks, and go for vibrant or dramatic pieces in spaces where you want to add energy, like the living room or kitchen.
  2. Match Colors with Existing Decor: Look at the colors in the artwork and select pieces that complement or enhance your existing decor palette. Coastal photography offers plenty of neutral, earthy tones as well as vibrant blues and greens.
  3. Choose High-Quality Art Pieces: Investing in high-quality fine art photography means you’ll enjoy a crisp, clear image with lasting color and detail. Quality materials like canvas or framed fine art paper ensure your coastal prints remain vibrant for years.
  4. Consider Scale: Large wall art pieces can make a strong visual impact, especially in open spaces. Smaller coastal prints work well as part of a gallery wall or in smaller spaces like bathrooms and entryways.
  5. Let the Art Speak to Your Experiences and Life: Select pieces that evoke an emotional response. Whether you’re drawn to the sandy hues of an abstract, the tropical feel of St. Lucia, or the calming simplicity of Nairn Beach, choose art that resonates with you.

Since ART is a true reflection of what the artist sees, feels, and interprets - it is therefore a reflection of ones self .... thru their ART.

Read more to find out who I am as an artist, why I create, and what makes my work unique. My goal isn’t just to sell art—it’s to create connections through experiences, memories, and storytelling.

Lisa Blount fine art photographerBorn in California and raised in Arkansas, Lisa has lived within seven miles of her grandparents’ 1936 homesteadsince she was ten years old. As an only child of an only child, she spent countless hours fueling her creativity—crafting, designing, and refining ideas.   While Arkansas has changed over the years, Lisa remains drawn to life’s simple yet beautiful moments, finding inspiration in nature, landscapes, and the great outdoors.

Lisa’s passion for travel and photography comes to life in her artwork, where she transforms memories and experiences into fine art for others to enjoy. Whether capturing the serene beauty of a distant landscape or the colors of an unforgettable journey, she seeks to preserve the essence of a moment through her work.

Married to her husband Jim for over 30 years, Lisa is also a proud mom to two incredible boys—who, in her opinion, hang the moon. They play many roles in her artistic journey—sometimes as the subjects, the equipment carriers, the art installers, the travel companions, and always as the inspiration behind her creativity. Above all, they are the reason she continues pushing forward to create, capture, and share beauty with the world.

Q: What is your favorite past-time or hobby?

A: Of course, photography is my passion—but it's more than just taking pictures. I’ve spent years capturing moments, creating digital photo books, scrapbooking, and making collages. I love the creative process behind photography just as much as I love the photos themselves.

Q: How did you first get into photography?

A: I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t taking pictures! As a kid, I always stocked up on film or disposable cameras before school trips and vacations. About 14 years ago, before a family trip to Yellowstone, I invested in my first “real” camera because I wanted to capture the wildlife. That trip sparked my journey into fine art photography, and I haven’t stopped capturing experiences since.

Q: What type of photographer are you?

A: I consider myself an Experience Photographer—a term I explain in detail in my blog! My art isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about capturing moments, emotions, and memories that connect with people on a deeper level.

Q: What is your favorite thing to photograph?

A: Whatever catches my eye at the moment! I don’t force a shot—I wait for the right moment to unfold naturally. I’m drawn to nature, abstract textures, and landscapes, but one of my favorite subjects is lichen. The intricate details, colors, and patterns in lichen are like miniature abstract paintings in nature!

Q: How does your art relate to your life story?

A: My art has always been about capturing experiences. When my kids were little, I took photos to document our travels so they could relive the memories through scrapbooks. Over time, I realized those captured moments weren’t just for them—they were for me, too.

Even my home wall tells of my experiences - Wall gallery using large pieces of acrylic art -Lisa Blount photography

Later, as my parents aged, I saw firsthand how photography could be a powerful tool for memory. My father had vascular dementia, and I used my photos to help him recall faces, places, and his life story. Watching him flip through those pictures, trying to piece together memories, was when I truly realized the impact of art—it’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about pausing, reflecting, and remembering.  Life is short - enjoy the moment and remember the happiness.  That’s when Lisa Blount Photography took on a deeper purpose.

Q: What makes your art different?

A: Two things: experience and scale.

    1. My art isn’t just a picture—it’s an experience. Each piece is meant to evoke a memory, spark a feeling, or remind you of a journey, a place, or a time in your life.
    2. I offer extra-large, statement-sized art. Seeing a photograph in a tiny viewfinder is one thing, but seeing it printed several feet wide on a wall is an entirely different experience!

    Q: Isn’t it just a photo?

A: Yes… and no! It starts as a photograph, but the process I use turns it into fine art. I print only on premium materials like TruLife Acrylic, Chromaluxe High Gloss Metal, and Dibond Brushed Metal—each chosen for its ability to bring out depth, color, and detail. My pieces are large, bold, and conversation starters—so much more than just a simple photo.

Q: Why do you select those specific print mediums?

A: I want my art to be the highest quality possible, and these mediums allow the colors to pop, the details to shine, and the image to feel immersive. Plus, they are ready-to-hang with no need for framing. If you’re going to invest in fine art, it should be something you’re proud to display for years to come.

I spent several years researching, testing, and refining print mediums, products, and vendors to ensure I offer only the best. As technology evolves, I continually evaluate new materials, ensuring they meet or exceed my high standards, so you always receive the finest quality available.

    Q: Is your art signed?

A: Yes! All of my art is digitally signed before printing, ensuring authenticity and a personal touch.

Q: Do you offer limited edition pieces?

A: Absolutely! I have several limited edition pieces that are digitally signed and numbered, making them exclusive collector’s items.

    Q: I can't envision art in a room—do you have any suggestions?

A: Absolutely! As an artist, I believe art should be the focal point of a space, drawing the eye and setting the tone for the entire room. To help with that, I’ve created mood boards that pair my artwork with furniture, color palettes, and design styles. These can be found in my blog: ART with Mood Boards.

Many people have told me they love seeing how art can transform a space, and they look forward to each new mood board I create. It’s a great way to visualize how a piece will look in your home or office before making a decision!

But I get it—sometimes you want to see the art in person before making a decision. That’s why I have a gallery at a local business in Springdale, Arkansas, where several select pieces are on display. Some are available for sale on-site, while others can be ordered and shipped directly to your home or office. If you'd like to visit, just contact me for an appointment, and I’ll be happy to walk you through the collection.

Also,  I partner with a Interior Design Firms to host "Art, Wine & Design"—a special evening where you can meet both designers and the artist (me!). It’s an exciting event with a great atmosphere, and I always bring a selection of new art pieces, as well as smaller take-home items like acrylic blocks, greeting cards, coasters, and magnets.

Q: Where in the U.S. do you have art?

A: My art has found homes across the United States, with customers from coast to coast purchasing pieces for their homes and offices.

I’m also deeply honored to have two of my pieces displayed in the budget room of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This was a completely unexpected request, and I’m incredibly grateful that my work represents Northwest Arkansas in such a historic space.  The art now hangs in the Congressman's office.  university arkansas old main tower art by Lisa Blount

All purchases, however, are made exclusively through my website at www.lisablountphotography.com or by contacting me directly.

Q: Is your art made in the USA?

A: Yes! I’m proud to say that all of my art is printed and assembled in the USA. When you purchase from me, you’re supporting at least two small businesses right here in the U.S.

    Q: I need a specific size, but I don’t see it listed.

A: Great question! Most of my prints can be custom-sized to fit your specific space. Just reach out, and I’ll be happy to provide a custom quote.

One of the things I love most about my work is the ability to offer flexibility in sizing. Unlike mass-produced retail prints, I consider myself a boutique artist, focusing on personalized selections for my customers. I understand that not all art fits in every space—and it shouldn’t. Your art should be as unique as you and your home.

Let me know what you need, and I’ll do my best to make it work! You can contact me directly through my website or you can  Email me.

Q: How do I know which size art is right for my space?

A: Choosing the right size for your art is important! A general rule is that artwork should fill two-thirds to three-quarters of your wall space or be about 60-75% of the width of your furniture (like a couch or bed). If you’re unsure, I recommend using painter’s tape to map out different sizes on your wall or reaching out—I’m happy to provide guidance!   .... I have a BLOG on that!

Q: What makes your art different from mass-produced prints?

A: Great question!!  Unlike mass-produced prints, my work is artist-selected, professionally printed, and available in custom sizes. Each piece is crafted using premium, archive-rated, museum-quality materials like TruLife Acrylic, Chromaluxe High Gloss Metal, and Dibond Brushed Metal, offering superior durability, clarity, and depth. Plus, every piece is digitally signed, ensuring authenticity.

Q: Do you offer framing options?

A: Most of my pieces are designed to be frameless, with museum-mounted floating backs that allow them to stand out without needing a traditional frame. However, if you prefer a framed look, let me know—I can custom quote frames for your selected art piece!

Q: How is the artwork installed?

A: My TruLife Acrylic, Metal, and Dibond prints come with a museum float mount, which means they hang effortlessly on your wall without additional framing. Each piece comes ready to install—simply use a sturdy cleat system depending on the weight of the piece. Instructions are included, but if you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

Q: How do I clean and care for my art?

A: Here's the short story...  Different materials require different care:
TruLife Acrylic: Use a microfiber cloth and acrylic-safe cleaner (avoid ammonia-based products).
High Gloss Metal: Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth or a mix of water and isopropyl alcohol.
Dibond Brushed Metal: Use a dry microfiber cloth or slightly damp cloth for fingerprints.
Canvas Prints: Dust gently with a soft cloth or brush; avoid excessive moisture.

The longer story can be found on my cleaning tips page!

Q: How long does shipping take?

A: Since each piece is custom made just for you, standard production time is approximately 14 business days. Shipping times vary based on your location and I usually estimately 7 business days, but you’ll receive tracking information once your order has shipped. If you need a rush order, let me know—I’ll see what’s possible!

    Q: Do you ship internationally?

A: At this time, I primarily ship within the United States, but if you’re interested in international shipping, please contact me, and I’ll see what options are available and can get you a quote.

Q: What is your return or exchange policy?

A: Because each piece is custom made just for you, all sales are final. However, if your art arrives damaged, please contact me immediately with photos, and I’ll work quickly to resolve the issue.   Damaged art will be replaced at no cost to you - as long as pictures of the damaged box and art are provided.

Q: Do you offer gift certificates?

A: Yes! If you’re looking for the perfect gift but aren’t sure which piece to choose, I offer gift certificates so your recipient can pick the art that speaks to them.   PLUS - it's a great last minute idea when your gift giving time is shorter than shipping.
